The development of emotional intelligence (EI) is well-established as making a positive difference to employee performance. This research explored the perspectives of 21 emotional intelligence trainers in New Zealand to identify variables that contribute to the design of successful emotional intelligence training.  The findings highlighted strong alignment of (EI) trainer practice with emotional intelligence theory, and also identified discrete roles within the generic term ''EI trainer''. Additionally, successful emotional intelligence training outcomes were predicated on the development of self-awareness; and the importance of designing a safe learning environment characterised by trust. In response, The Emotional Intelligence Learning Environment model and the Self-awareness Engine of Growth model were developed, as well as a new ''trust'' definition. To address EI trainers'' relative isolation but desire to ''connect'' with other trainers, two EI symposia were organised (in 2012 and 2014) with a focus on cultivating a fledgling emotional intelligence community of practice.
