Learners experience various transitions, both physical and psychological over their educational career; however, for learners in Pakistan, the transition into university can be a particularly perplexing time. Mrs Javed used mixed methods to explore the transition experiences of first year entrants in one Pakistani university. Her findings revealed that many students experienced difficulty in adapting to the higher education context. It was the first time that most learners had broken away from the supportive family environment. The demands for more independent learning were also new for these students, as was the shift from single gender education to the mixed gender university setting. Many students also faced the challenge of adapting to an English medium of instruction at university. These factors had a significant influence on the success of learners' transition into university, in shaping their adaptation experiences and challenges, and in the time taken for the transition process.
