New Zealand Cricket intervened in cricket in New Zealand between 1998 and 2008 to revitalise and grow the game, which had been declining at the community level (in clubs and schools). Mr Astle used his personal experience, understanding, and insights as a practitioner-manager to construct an insider-researcher longitudinal case study of this intervention. He examined the key features of New Zealand Cricket’s intervention; namely, its national plan and programme, the translation of these (by a regional delivery network of Sport Development Officers) into practice, and their ongoing impact on the sustainable growth of cricket in the community. The case study was used as an exemplar for other sports. The lessons learned from this study illustrate how and why the sport development process needs to be planned, coordinated and long-term if it is to be effective at ensuring the future sustainability of a sport at the community level.
