In Teaching

I have written and published a professional textbook of Aerodynamics Principles for Ait Transport Pilots in order to bridge the gap between the classic aerodynamics textbooks and pilot training manuals.

I have developed, established, and coordinated the current aerodynamics courses for the BAv degree in the Massey University Air Transport Program.  This course combines the fundamental principles of classical aerodynamics for incompressible and compressible airflow with the analysis of forces acting on an aircraft/aerofoil across a range of speeds and their effects on the aircraft's performance. It needs to meet the requirements both of University bachelor’s degree and Civil Aviation Authority for professional pilots.

I also established Calculus and Physics courses for the first year Engineering students, when the Engineering branch in Wellington Campus first started in 2005. I prepared teaching materials for those courses. In particular, I set-up 20 lab experiments, and produced the Lab manuals and Workbooks for the first year Physics.

I have taught and coordinated: Calculus, Physics, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering systems for Engineering students; Mathematics, and Physics, for students in Foundation studies; Aerosciences, Aircraft Systems, and Aerodynamics for Aviation Air Transport Pilot students; Special Topics (research projects) for Aviation Management.

In Research

My research expertise is in fuels and emissions of internal combustion engines, and mathematical modelling.

My current research interests are in aviation related project:

  1. Biodiesel application in aviation diesel engine; Biodiesel is a sustainable fuel. To replace Jet fuel which is used by aviation diesel engine with biodiesel fuels is part of strategy of developing
  2. Mathematical model for force feed-back system of PC based flight simulator.
  3. Have supervised research projects of Aviation students in the areas, such as, biofuels, in-flight refuelling, electromagnetic braking for aircraft, and aerodynamics for drones.
  4. I carried out the research on remote sensing system for on-road vehicle emission measurement, which involving the knowledge of engines, applied optics, and electronic sensing processing.
  5. I was involved in several mathematical modelling projects by using dynamic system to analyse heat transfer, combustion process of coal storage, particle transport and gas flow in a combustor.
  6. I was an expert witness for an environmental court

Supervision

I have been a main supervisor and co-supervisor to PhD students

I have supervised many Master’s students and 4th year student research projects.

I have been external examiner for PhD and Masters theses.

I work at the School of Aviation, Massey University, New Zealand. I have teaching experience in aero-science and aircraft systems, physics and mathematics, and engineering courses. I have a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a Master’s degree in engineering-thermophysics–combustion, and a PhD in applied mathematics. Before starting university teaching career, had some 20 years research experience in mathematical modelling and fluid dynamics, combustion, and remote sensing of engine emissions. I am a member of ASME, AIAA, ANZIAM, and RSNZ, RAeS and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education and Research.

Project Title: Investigations into Applications of RFID & robotic technology in laundry sorting at rest homes

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and mechatronic technology has been applied to a laundry sorting system which can potentially be used by rest homes in the future to reduce the labour intensity of care givers, to increase the efficiency of laundry sorting, and to reduce the chance of missing garments. A type of small commercial RFID laundry tag, suitable for the laundry sorting conditions of a rest home, has been selected. These laundry tags have undergone endurance testing under actual washing and drying conditions with typical commercial laundry chemical products used in rest homes, and a laboratory conveyor belt was built for identifying and sorting tests of the tags. To overcome a major challenge of the limitations of their antenna and signal receiving systems in the proposed intelligent laundry sorting application, a strategy to coordinate the orientations of the tags, range of their antenna, and the amplification of signal receiving units has been investigated, and several antenna formats have been designed to improve the identification rate at different conveyor belt delivery speeds. A prototype laundry sorting system has been built, which consists of a complete tag detecting and identifying unit, the "brain", and a mechanical sorting implement unit, the "muscles".
