Other research interests include Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Augmented Reality (AR), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Experimental Design, User Experience and User Interface (UX/UI), Cognitive Psychology, Design Process, and Construction Management.

Dr. Daniel Paes holds a Ph.D. in Building Construction, with a concentration in Cognitive Psychology, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, United States. He also earned a B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Architecture and Urbanism and an M.Sc. in Construction Management (Thesis track) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Daniel’s research bridges basic and applied science, focusing on cognition, perception and learning within virtual environments for design, construction, and training applications. His work explores opportunities to improve assessment methods and enhance virtual experiences in the field.

Current Projects

Project Title: How much do they recall? Measuring the effect of safety training on human memory

Safety training is important. It reduces accidents in dangerous workplaces, such as construction sites. And it is important to refresh training to ensure people retain the lessons. But the recommended intervals between sessions vary wildly (from 6 months for building evacuations to 24 months for construction workers), because no one knows how long people retain the information. In this study, we will compare the efficacy of practical, theoretical, and virtual reality training. Our findings will ensure that the design and implementation of safety training programmes is empirically based. We will provide a sound scientific foundation for safety regulations worldwide.
