Dr Sarah Pain BAgrSc(Hons), BBioTech, PhD

Senior Lecturer in Pastoral Livestock Production

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Agriculture and Environment

I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate study at the University of Adelaide, in South Australia. I worked as a lecturer at the University of Adelaide prior to moving to New Zealand in 2008 to take a lecturing position at Massey University within the Pastoral Livestock Production group. I have worked with a range of animal species including previously, including, rats, fish, pigs, chickens, horses, and ruminant animals, but my research now primarily focuses on sheep reproduction, nutrition, physiology and production.

Research Expertise

Research Interests

I am primarily interested in the influence of environment and nutrition on animal development and physiology; more specifically, the use of environmental and/or nutritional manipulation to alter various physiological responses within the animal, primarily using fetal programming models.

Project Title: Evaluation of a panel of internal control genes (ICG) by real-time PCR for qualitative gene expression analysis in ovine tissue

This pilot study aimed to identify a collection of stable ICGs in ovine mammary gland, muscle, liver and pancreas that can be used within our laboratory for targeted ovine qPCR studies related to our sheep fetal programming paradigms. This would allow us to extend our current research beyond applied animal production science to identification of potential molecular mechanisms that may be responsible for the physiologically observed fetal programming effects. Identifying the most stable genes in each tissue, would allow us to identify the best candidate genes for use as ICGs in future gene expression analyses. Given the limited information available on reliable ovine ICGs, the data generated by this pilot study is of interest to our research partners and other scientific groups working with ovine tissue and molecular biology techniques.

Project Title: Herbage exposure in utero

The aim of this study was to highlight and evaluate to role of prenatal (in utero) and immediate postnatal (suckling period) flavour exposure of plantain (Plantago lanceolata) in feeding preferences in sheep after weaning and persistence of feeding preferences later in life. Increased knowledge of prenatal flavour exposure may be a beneficial method of modifying a sheep's feeding preferences. By taking advantage of their mother's experience the offspring may gain a larger spectrum of flavour memories, which would be useful for producers in the sense that they would show easier neophilia and less neophobia towards novel pastures. Sheep with prenatally imprinted diet preferences may have quicker transition to new herbage types and increased voluntary intake, resulting in increased subsequent performance.
