Prof Nicolette Sheridan DipOccHealth Practice, MPubHealth, PhD

Head of School - School of Nursing

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Nursing

Research. Professor Sheridan is principal or named investigator on 28 research projects (2006-17) awarded approximately NZD$11,000,000.  Twenty-three projects have been completed.

Five studies are in progress. Two are being undertaken in parallel in NZ and Ontario and Québec, Canada: ‘Implementing models of primary health care for older adults with complex needs’ funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand (NZD$1,199,925) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CAD$2,499,938). Sheridan was PI of the NZ project until mid-2016 when she accepted a professorial position at Massey University; she is continuing as co-lead until completion in 2018.

In 2016 ‘Knowledge Translation in Australasian paediatric acute care settings: a multi-centred, cluster, randomised controlled trial comparing a tailored, theory informed Knowledge Translation intervention versus passive dissemination of a bronchiolitis guideline (PREDICT KT Study)’ was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council Australia (AUD$600,000).

Two New Zealand research projects also awarded funding in 2016 were ‘The STEP trial’ by the Ministry of Social Development (NZD$750,000) and ‘Measuring and optimising implementation of diabetes control strategies within primary care, and developing a cost-effectiveness model’ by Counties Manukau Health (NZD$184,000).

Nicolette is Director of the Centre for Nursing and Health Research at Massey University New Zealand.  She is a registered nurse with a PhD and Master in Public Health from the University of Auckland and holds occupational health and tertiary teaching qualifications. She has tribal affiliations to Ngāpuhi in the North of Aotearoa. Her research interests include health-care consumer experiences of long term conditions, and investigating disparities in primary health care services between indigenous and non-indigenous citizens, and Pacific and non-Pacific citizens, as a means of monitoring government commitment to indigenous rights and equity in health care.
