Associate Professor David Thomas BSc, PhD

Associate Professor in Companion Animal Science

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Agriculture and Environment

David is an established academic with experience in the fields of animal science, gut and skin physiology and companion animal nutrition. David obtained his first degree from Dundee University (BSc (Hons) in Zoology), and was awarded his PhD from the Institute of Zoology, University College London (Mammalian Seasonal Physiology). He has held post-doctoral, lecturer and senior lecturer positions at Massey University, and has spent time working for HortResearch (Ruakura Research Centre, Hamilton). Research interests include all aspects of companion animal nutrition: functionality of food supplements and ingredients, age and seasonal effects on energy requirements, health implications of high carbohydrate consumption, effects inorganic vs organic sources of mineral supplementation and optimal dietary fatty acid ratios.
