From managing air pollution to preventing microbial disease outbreaks, and from ensuring food and drinking water safety to minimising the impacts of natural disasters, environmental health professionals have a passion for protecting human health. With a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science (Environmental Health), you will be able to take your skills to a new level.
Find out more about the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science parent structure.
The Environmental Health endorsement is particularly suited to students who have completed an Environmental Health major, a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health, or have a suitable bachelor’s degree with a health protection background.
Investigate your areas of interest
The programme is structured in a way allows you to undertake up to three deep-dive investigations into specific aspects of air quality, water quality, noise, or another health protection topic such as contaminated land investigation.
In each course, you will select up to three topics to report on, from a subject-specific menu of nine. In some cases these may be substituted with an applied monitoring project agreed with an academic supervisor and subject to equivalent assessments. Although we will do everything we can to accommodate your own ideas, some topics may be less suitable for distance study than others.
This qualification should not be seen as an independent route to employment as an Environmental Health Officer under the Environmental Health Officers Qualifications Regulations 1993, for which either a Bachelor of Health Science (Environmental Health) or a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health is required. This programme is designed to build on the foundations of these other qualifications.
Professionals in environmental health work in a range of agencies that have specific functions relating to human health protection. The two most prominent roles are Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) with local authorities (city and district councils) and Health Protection Officers (HPOs) with District Health Boards. Graduates are also employed with specific central government ministries and agencies, regional councils, and private companies contracting environmental health services to local authorities.
The PGDipHlthSc may help you to take your health protection career to the next level.
